Announcements

Members are reminded to go to www.fcnl.org for current action information from the Friends Committee on National Legislation. That page will also provide access links to many specific topics as well as a way to get on their email list. Thanks, Steve & Joan Spencer.

Alison Martinez' five healthy, bright, sweet-natured kittens are ready for new homes.  There are four marmalade males and a white calico female. They are free to Friends and friends of Friends, so please let your friends know.  E-mail alison1@cybermesa.com or call 310-2743 to arrange to see them (much delight, no obligation.)

Do you need a shovel, snow shovel, rake, or bow saw? Alison Martinez has these to give away. Please contact her at alison1@cybermesa.com or call 310-2743. Thank you.

Outdoor Nature Meditation: All summer every Thursday from 5:30 to 6:00 pm at the Canyon Road Meeting House Backyard.

Friends in the Arts meets regularly on the 4th Thursday of each month at 6 pm at the meetinghouse.

The Good Works Committee is looking for committee members. This committee is responsible for identifying the organizations and agencies which will receive donations from the meeting. Anyone interested in helping make such decisions may call Wyn Lewis at 982-4588.

Updated Meeting directory is available. There have been many changes in the directory in the last few months as we tracked down members for which we did not have current addresses. Friends and attenders can request a copy at any time, either sent to you as an email attachment or "printed on demand" and mailed to you.  To receive it by email or for hard copy contact Bob Gaines (gaines@comcast.net, 466-1746).  Please specify whether you want the local Santa Fe directory or the outside Santa Fe directory, or both.

Help us walk lighter on the Earth -- donate cloth napkins to the meetinghouse. We are wanting to walk lighter on the Earth...so if you have any spare cloth napkins you can donate to our Canyon Rd Meetinghouse please bring them in. There is a basket in the kitchen to receive your gifts. The resident will launder them and no longer need to purchase paper napkins! Thank you.  Kathleen Burke

Minutes of Business Meeting for Worship:

Present: Peggy Giltrow, David Giltrow, Rebecca Henderson, Greg Cliburn, Pam Gilchrist, John Kretzmann, Steve Spencer, Alan Rogers, Bettina Raphael, Philip Balcombe, Mary Ray Cate, Pamela Geyer, Jennifer Wellington-White, Bob Gaines, Marguerite Kearns

The Meeting started at 12:45 p.m. with silence.

The new clerk Bob Gaines set a tone for business meeting by reading from Faith and Practice, as well as Where Should I Stand? The selections were intended to create a more spirit-filled mood for conducting business. One suggestion was to have meeting attenders stand when speaking and addressing the clerk. Friends agreed during the subsequent discussion that the same outcome would be achieved when sitting and it would better accommodate the needs of the business meeting.

(1.)  Minutes: Friends approved the minutes for the Sixth Month.

(2.)  Question of Incorporation: Meetinghouse trustee Elliott Skinner expressed concern in letter form about the possible personal liability of officers of Santa Fe Monthly Meeting. Elliott recommended increasing the liability insurance coverage and considering incorporating as a non-profit to provide greater protection for officers and others who might be sued. Elliott also noted the experience and recommendations of Albuquerque Monthly Meeting which has been incorporated since 1958. Friends appointed an ad hoc committee of Peggy Giltrow, David Henkel and Rebecca Henderson to look into the matter and provide information on incorporation and – if possible – a recommendation for consideration at the August business meeting. In the past when the issue was raised, there hadn’t been unity on the question.

(3.)  Nominating Committee: Discussion about the lack of clarity about the role of Nominating Committee, its duties and responsibilities, was carried over from previous business meetings as the Committee has continued its work to bring forward names to fill remaining positions. Friends accepted the Nominating Committee report, in recognition of the fact that more work needs to be done to complete the process. One member suggested that Faith and Practice can be a resource in terms of moving forward with filling still-vacant positions until such a time that the duties and responsibilities of the Nominating Committee are clearer.

(4.)  Finance Committee: Friends accepted and approved the Finance Committee Report which noted the balance in the General Fund, which is used for operating budget expenses, was $9,034 at the start of the year and is now $1,763. The sharp drop is due to budgeted expenditures exceeding donations. The finance committee will focus on informing the meeting more fully of our financial situation. The members of the committee are Lee Carter, Greg Cliburn, Jennie Crystle, and Peggy Giltrow, convener. Friends also approved increasing the Meeting’s liability insurance from $1 million to $2 million.

(5.)  Treasurer’s Report: Friends accepted and approved the Treasurer’s Report (posted at sf.imym.org) for the first half of 2009. The new treasurer, Greg Cliburn, explained that the total bank balance is $16,428; however, all but $1,763 is in the Maintenance Fund and other dedicated funds. The treasurer noted that there is no fund designated specifically as a reserve fund. The business meeting has authorized the treasurer to borrow from the dedicated funds to cover operating expenses if donations to the General Fund do not keep pace with operating expenses.

(6.)  Ministry & Oversight: The M&O Report, accepted and approved by Friends, included an action item to identify members with an asterisk in the Meeting directory.

Philip Balcombe will be the contact for those in Meeting seeking care until another individual is able to volunteer for the rest of the year. Martha Davis is liaison with the Los Alamos worship group. Shelley Cohen continues as liaison with the Las Vegas worship group. And still to be found are liaisons for the Clearlight worship group in Taos and the 9 a.m. meeting on Canyon Road. Concerns of several individuals also were addressed in depth by M&O.

(7.)  Recorder’s Report: Friends accepted and approve the Recorder’s Report prepared by Beverly Busching which announced progress on locating members who have moved or are not currently active. The current total membership is 94. A new form to record personal information from members is in the process of creation.

(8.) Greeters: Steve Spencer is in charge of greeters; he will greet members and attenders in July. Kathleen Burke is scheduled for August, Rebecca Alllahyari will greet in September, Pam Gilchrist in October, and Steve Spencer again in November.

(9.) Ad Hoc Future Planning Committee: Friends accepted and approved the report of the Subcommittee of the Ad Hoc Planning Committee, which consists of Beverly Busching, Guthrie Miller, Martha Davis, David Giltrow and Bettina Raphael. The group has been working with the donor, as well as neighbors of the Camino Lejo property in Santa Fe, to address restrictions on its use. Recommendations are expected to be presented to the August business meeting. Beverly Busching is laying down her role as convener of the Future Planning Committee. Bettina Raphael will be the new convener.

(10.) Building Committee: Friends approved the report of the Building Committee.

(11.) Resident’s Report: The month of June showed 11 of 30 days of occupancy for the Guest Apartment, an income of $740, and 80 hours spent in duties of the resident.

(12.) Friends in the Arts: This group of eight members is not under the care of the Meeting so it wasn’t necessary to report to business meeting.

(13.) Peace and Social Concerns: A new version of the banner on torture that’s in place at the front of the Meeting is eliciting comments from passersby.

The meeting ended with silence at 2:05 p.m. The minutes of Business Meeting for the Seventh Month are respectfully submitted by Marguerite Kearns, Recording Clerk.
