Report to 1-11 Business Meeting

Peace and Social Concerns addresses issues that arise from Friends' interest in the Quaker principles of nonviolence, speaking truth to power, social justice, and reconciliation at local, national and international levels.

At our second gathering on 1/9/2011, eleven Friends met and asked, “how we might have a stronger voice?”.  Other agenda items were: having a public presence at the MLK, Jr. commemoration (1/17 at noon) and Witness for the People rally the following day.  David Henkel and others would like to participate in a working group considering Sabbath/moral economics.  Currently David is reading The Biblical Jubilee and the Struggle for Life (Kinsler and Kinsler, 2006) and The Biblical Vision of Sabbath Economics (Ched Myers, 2008)..

By email consensus the P & SC committee are sponsors of the "Witness for the People" rally to be held at 11am in the Rotunda on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

David Henkel, with Beverly Bushing editing,  agreed to write a letter to the editor connecting the MLK, Jr. commemoration with the "Witness for the People" rally.

Bob Gaines provided addresses for letter writing regarding Bradley Manning’s human rights which were sent on to our commitee.

Carrol Pearson, member of the Las Vegas Worship Group,  requests SFFM to consider individual monthly pledges to support the asylum seekers sheltered by the Westminster Presbyterian Church  - as have 5 members of the Las Vegas worship group.  These donations assist the Westminster Church in its work with Sipriana Girado and her children.

Individuals in the SFFM who are concerned about this case and who wish to learn more about the family and their background are encouraged to contact either Erik Mason <> or Bob and Carrol Pearson ( 505- 425-8980) .

Another proposal before us: May 6-8 area congregations will host Fletcher Harper of GreenFaith at United Church for a series of events aimed at helping equip congregations and synagogues in Santa Fe on addressing green issues.  Larry Rasmussen is identifying co-sponsors, including the Santa Fe Institute, around the theme, "Social Networks and Religious Environmentalism: What are the Possibilities?"  He is raising $2000 for GreenFaith for three days of events so he is looking for $100-200 from each of 10-15 co-sponsors.  The GreenFaith web site is excellent:  Would Santa Fe Friends Meeting consider sponsoring and participating in this workshop?

Our Peace and Social concerns meetings are held on the 2nd 1st Day at Rise of Meeting; all are welcome.
