<p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-size:10.0pt'>Ad Hoc Headdress Committee
</span></b><span style='font-size:10.0pt'>presented their findings on the
Native American tableta, formerly mounted in the Meeting room. Their research
indicates that it is an item worn by women being initiated into a Hopi womens
society and, as such, it is a personal possession and does not belong to a
society or clan. It is not a sacred item in the sense of being used in a
religious ceremony; however, Hopi consider all ceremonies to be sacred in the
sense that life is sacred. Dr. Barton Wright, former curator of the Museum of
New Mexico and a leading authority on Hopi culture and crafts, surmises
that,at some point in her life Olive Rush did a Hopi woman a great service
and she repaid Olive with something that was very important to her. It was a
great gift and it would be wonderful to know what precipitated this mutual
relationship. A knowledgeable manager of the Case Trading Post at the
Wheelwright Museum estimates the age of the piece at ca. 1900-1925. Two Hopi
woman were consulted, one of them a member of the Mamzrau society, and felt it
was acceptable to display the headdress.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt'>&nbsp;</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt'>The committee recommended
that the <b>tableta</b> be returned to its original location above the door in
the main room of the Meeting House, after placing it in a protective mount for
security and preservation, accompanied by a descriptive plaque.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt'>&nbsp;</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt'>An extensive discussion
followed. Alternate locations, either for display or storage of the item, were
suggested. Some felt that Native Americans may still be disturbed by the
display of the tableta in the Meeting House. Another person suggested that
display of the tableta in the Meeting room is a symbol of Quakerism in finding
that which is pure in the human heart, and in its openness to be informed by
others. Others felt that Quaker belief in simplicity places this decision
within larger concerns about our place of worship. No clear resolution on the
value of further consultation was reached. Posting of findings related to the
tableta if displayed<b> </b>seemed to be important to most.</span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt'>&nbsp;</span></p>

disposition of the tableta.</span></p>
